POSITION SUMMARY
The Admissions Academic Counselor plays a vital role in supporting the academic transition
and early success of Concordia Texas's first-year students, including transfer students.
This position provides targeted academic guidance during students' first year, helping
them set a solid foundation for their academic journey at Concordia Texas. Following
the first year (two academic semesters), responsibility for academic advising transitions
to Student Central. Additionally, this role actively participates in recruitment activities,
including high school visits, fall and spring travel recruitment seasons, and presentations
highlighting Concordia Texas’s academic offerings to prospective students. The Admissions
Academic Counselor reports to the Director of Admissions and Recruitment and serves
as a liaison with Student Central.
POSITION FUNCTIONS
Academic Advising for First-Year Students
- Provide personalized academic advising to first-year and transfer students, assisting with course selection, registration, and degree planning to ensure a successful transition to Concordia Texas.
- Offer initial academic support exclusively for the first academic year (two semesters), after which advising transitions to Student Central.
Recruitment Activities
- Participate in recruitment activities during fall and spring travel seasons, visiting high schools and engaging with prospective students and families.
- Deliver presentations to high schools, showcasing academic programs and student success opportunities at Concordia Texas.
- Coordinate targeted recruitment efforts for prospective honors program students, working closely with the Honors Program to identify and engage academically talented students.
- Guide honors program applicants through the admissions and enrollment processes, providing support and information specific to the honors experience at Concordia Texas.
Retention Support and Re-Enrollment Assistance
- Develop strategies focused on retaining first-year students, emphasizing a smooth transition from the first to the second semester.
- Support students re-enrolling after three or more semesters of absence to facilitate their reintegration into Concordia Texas’s academic programs.
- Connect students with campus resources that support academic and personal success during their first year.
Collaboration and Student Central Liaison
- Partner with Student Central to ensure continuity of support as students transition to second year advising.
- Coordinate with university departments to offer holistic advising, addressing academic, personal, and professional development needs.
Student Transition and Success
- Assist first-year students in setting academic and personal goals that enhance their success and prepare them for further academic progression.
- Facilitate workshops and orientation sessions to support first-year success and re-enrollment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred, ideally in higher education, counseling, or a related field.
- Minimum of two years of experience in academic advising or student services, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills for establishing rapport with diverse student populations.
- Knowledge of academic advising principles, retention strategies, and student development theory.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with advising and registration software and tools.
