Concordia University Texas has been chosen as a host site for the NCAA Division III West Regional Baseball Tournament Wednesday, May 15 through Saturday, May 19 at Tornado Field. This marks the first time in school history that the Tornado’s have been selected to host an NCAA post-season event in any sport.
The 2013 NCAA Division III West Regional Baseball Tournament will feature 56 teams competing at eight different regional sites, one of which is Concordia University Texas. The competitors will be comprised of 38 automatic qualifying teams, which are conference champions; four teams among independents and conference champions in non-automatic qualifying leagues; and 14 additional teams that are at-large representatives. The NCAA will announce the entire field on Monday, May 13 and send either six or eight teams to compete at Tornado Field in Austin.
“Our young men have worked tirelessly for the last two years to bring home American Southwest Conference championships, and we are all thrilled that the NCAA chose to honor our success by choosing us as a host for the play-off tournament,” Tommy Boggs, Concordia University Texas head men’s baseball coach, said. “I am excited for the community to come to the ball park and see the type of top-level baseball our Tornado’s have been executing these past two seasons.”
Concordia's baseball program thrived during its first two full seasons of play at Tornado Field, winning the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Tournament crown to earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2012. The Tornados entered the 2013 season ranked 13th nationally by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and 16th by D3Baseball.com. In addition, head coaches in the sport, sports information directors and select media members have picked Concordia to win the ASC West Division title in the league's preseason poll this spring.
The series will open on Wednesday, May 15 with four games being played throughout the day. Thursday, May 16 and Friday, May 17 will consist of three games being played on each day, and Saturday, May 17 will consist of two games being played—one which will name the regional champion and move onto the NCAA Division III College World Series that will take place in Appleton, Wisconsin from May 24-May 28.
Ticket prices are $10 for adult daily passes and $6 for student daily passes that allow admission to any game during that calendar day. There is also an option to purchase tournament passes, which will cost $25 for adults and $10 for students. These passes will allow for attendance for the entire tournament. Tickets will be available for sale on site each day. There will be no advance sales and no credit card sales.
Tornado Field has previously been the host site for multiple ASC postseason events in 2011 and 2012. Concordia hosted ASC Championship First Round games, a best-of-three format, in 2011 and 2012 and the double-elimination ASC Championship Round in 2012.
