The Concordia University Texas men’s basketball team defeated the number one seed, Mary Hardin Baylor, in a 80-76 game that allowed the Tornados to clinch the American Southwest Conference (ASC) title and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The ASC Tournament began on Friday, February 22 with Concordia ousting Mississippi College 78 to 76 and advancing to Saturday’s semifinals where they played against, and defeated, The University of Texas—Dallas with an 82 over 75 point victory for the Tornados. Concordia University Texas secured the conference title, and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament, on Sunday with a win over Mary Hardin Baylor.
Concordia University Texas junior, Josh Sanchez, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and scored a personal game-record high of 34 points. Sanchez rallied his team together as Mary Hardin Baylor challenged Concordia’s lead throughout the game. Aiding Sanchez were key players, Nick Haynes and Dwayne Patterson, who were all named as members of the all-tournament squad for their outstanding performances.
The men will travel to Trinity University this Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m. to compete against the Trinity University men’s Tigers in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Trinity men’s basketball advanced to the tournament with their championship victory in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference last week.
