Prof. Blythe Cates



Blythe Cates was born and raised in Southern California to a very musical family. Being surrounded by such musicality she began studying classical music at the age of 9 with Patricia Gee.

While studying with Ms. Gee, Ms. Cates competed and successfully won several young artist competitions and scholarships in the California region and nation throughout her junior high and high school years. After completing high school, Ms. Cates went on to complete her Bachelors of Music at the University of California and studied with renowned technician Nina Hinson. After the completion of her undergraduate degree, Ms. Cates went on to study Opera Performance at the famed University of Texas, Butler Opera School with Rose Taylor and Dr. Robert DeSimone.

Since attaining her degrees Ms. Cates has performed as a soloist with the Inland Master Chorale, the Austrian American Academy and the Central Presbyterian Church of Austin. Ms. Cates has performed opera roles from the opera's of Lakmé, The Old Maid and the Thief, Summer and Smoke, The Rape of Lucretia, The Consul, The Impresario, The Magic Flute, Carmen and Il Pagliacchi. She also has extensive experience in performing musical theater.

Ms. Cates began teaching in 2000 and as a teacher, she specializes in breath support, vocal health, age-appropriate material, musical interpretation and applying classical vocal technique to many genres, including opera, classical, pop, folk and musical theater. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and runs a private voice studio in South Austin. She joined the staff of Concordia University Texas as a vocal instructor in Fall 2010.
